2012 Season's End, 2013 Season's Beginning

Well here it is, our last weekend is right before us. October 28th, 2012 the Tar Heel Motel in Nags Head will close for the season. We are hoping it is going to be a great weekend to end the year. The first annual Zombie Beach Walk with film festival and Zombie Ball is right down the road from us.

It has been a lot of fun watching people pull over to take pictures of the marquee. Hopefully we will be able to get a few of the undead to stop for some photo shots before it's all over. We do have a Special Package for the last weekend so check it out online. Lots of scary fun going on, including the "Fear at the Pier" at Jennette's.

The weather is still holding to a beautiful 70 degrees and the fishing has been great the past two weeks. We've had a great season this year and can't wait until next year to see everyone again. Our opening date for 2013 is Friday March 15th, right in time for the St. Patrick's Day celebration. Online Reservations are available at all times so feel free to book your next trip at anytime during the year.Make sure you keep up with us on Facebook and the Blog. Contests, specials and upcoming events will be announced through out the winter so keep a look out.

Kids and the Outer Banks

What are some of our favorite things to do with the family when visiting The Tar Heel in Nags Head on the Outer Banks? Here are our top 5 choices (besides the beach of course!)

1. Fishing - it isn't just for boys! The Outer Banks is known for fishing and you don't have to have a boat. Pier fishing is what we recommend for the budding fisherman. The piers have rental rods, all the bait and the fishing fee covers the NC fishing license. All you have to do is show up. Don't worry if you are unsure yourself, all the piers have seasoned fisherman that are more then helpful.

2. Pirate Adventures of the Outer Banks. Who doesn't want to be a pirate? Join the motley crew on the Sea Gypsy for a unforgettable trip. After you sign up for the crew you will be outfitted in pirate attire, tattooed and boarded on to the Sea Gypsy. Sail out into the waters and find ye some treasure but not before a battle ensues and you have to fire your water cannons against the bad Pirate Pete. We aren't going to spoil this adventure so you'll have to go find out yourself! Make sure you call ahead and book reservations, this adventure books up. Captain Chum and his crew can be found on the Manteo Waterfront, only a 10 minute drive from us.

3. and 4. Go Carts and Putt-Putt Golf. You can't go to the beach and not do one or the other - or even both! There are several mini-golf spots through out the Outer Banks, all with their own theme. There a four that are located in Nags Head alone. Our favorite go cart track is Full Throttle Speedway in Nags Heads (right next to Mutiny Bay Mini-Golf). Full Throttle offers two tracks, an oval slick-track or a figure 8 track, and Indy style gas powered go-carts.

5. The NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. The aquarium is a magical place where the kids get to see the Outer Banks in a whole new light. Not only will they see sharks but they will get a glimpse into our coastal freshwater as well as what is in our marshlands and so much more. There are several daily programs as well as camps and outreach programs. Make visiting the beach not only fun but educational too!

So there you have it, our top 5 picks for kids! Book your next stay here at the Tar Heel Motel, we you are only steps away from the beach. Our outdoor pool is another favorite of our guests, perfect place to unwind or cool off after a day of exploring. Next shout out we'll hit our top favorite places to eat! We hope to see you soon.

Beautiful weather in Nags Head, Outer Banks NC

Tare Heel Motel, Nags Head Outer Banks

The weather this weekend has been a peek into what the summer has in store for us. Took a stroll around 10:00 am this morning on the beach and it was already reaching into the 80's. The ocean was clear and sparkling, I expected the ocean to be freezing but it was actually not so bad with ocean water temperature at 67 °F. Waves were chest high yesterday not so much today. None the less, surfers were out south of Jennette's Pier and sunbathers were stretched out getting rays as far as the eye could see.

A few more weeks until Memorial Day Weekend means a few more weeks at off season pricing. Now is the perfect time for that weekend getaway. Waiting for the holiday weekend for some beach time? Memorial Day Weekend is almost booked out for us at the Tar Heel, so if you haven't booked yet better do it soon!

April leaves with hoorahs and hooks!

We had a blow out weekend at the Tar Heel Motel! The last weekend of April marked the ending of the Outer Banks Bike Week. We had bikes lining one side of the motel and trucks with fishing poles lining the other! The weather was not the best over the weekend but both bikers and fisherman alike were troopers and the weekend turned out to be a lot of fun for everyone.

Our fishing group went out Saturday morning on the Fishin' Frenzy and it was not an easy ride. What they brought in was well worth the bumpy ride out there however. Eddie was kind enough to send us a few pictures and what a catch! They brought in just under 300 lbs of fish, not bad for a rainy and blustery day. Tuna and Dolphin where the catch of the day and by the smiles on these guys it made up for any ugly weather. Thanks for the pics Eddie, we will be posting these on the Tar Heel Motel's Facebook Brag Spot album.

Reunion Party at the Tar Heel

This weekend was a blast with the entire motel booked for a reunion. Guests came from all over North Carolina and Virginia. One truck came in hauling a pull behind cooker and set up in front of the breezeway. Having booked the whole place, the group was able to spread out and set up stations throughout the motel grounds. Party central was in the breezeway with the grill close by that always had something delicious cooking. Fresh North Carolina shrimp and tuna, along with your traditional wings, burgers and hot dogs were all served up in style. To make it group friendly rain or shine, we took one of the kitchenettes and made it into the hospitality suite. Beds were removed and replaced with long tables to accommodate food and drinks.

Of course there is something for everyone to keep busy on the Outer Banks. Fishing, sight seeing, shopping, hiking are all minutes away. Let's not forget the beach that is only steps away. It was a joy to see everyone mingling and catching up with one another. We at the Tar Heel Motel look forward to having the group back next year for this annual event.

Sound like something you would be interested in? Call us at 252-441-6150 and we can discuss booking the entire place for your next reunion or event.

Go Fish!

The days are starting to warm up and these past two weeks have been bustling in Nags Head on the Outer Banks. People are opening their cottages, families are enjoying the beaches and the fishing piers are a busier these days.

Easter Weekend was a little slow for fishing but the fisherman were out none the less. The piers were catching Blow Toad, Sea Mullet and Skate. Sound fishing was good with Black Drum, Stripers and Trout. Offshore trips are bringing home Yellowfin and Wahoo.

This weekend and into the week we are expected to have wonderful weather. What are you waiting for? Last one to cast their line has to clean the catch!
